A Chinese family saga that unfolds over 25 years, this ode to change focuses on a troubled father-son relationship to analyse the enduring importance of the family in Chinese culture. 1976, the death of Chairman Mao and the downfall of the Gang of Four means that the painter Gengnian is finally released after years in a labour camp. He returns to a nine-year-old son, Xiangyang, who not only doesn't recognise him and denies his authority, but refuses to accept his father's dream that he too should become a painter. Deftly exploring the tension between tradition and modernity with insight and intimacy, Xiangyang struggles to fashion his own life, his quest reflecting the hopes of an entire generation. As the decades go by that produce a new China oblivious to its past we follow his stormy relationship with Gengian and its impact on the family. Riding the new wave of Chinese cinema Zhang Yang combines personal memories and salient moments of recent history to reveal the impact of the momentous social changes on one family.
