A cruel tale of adultery and revenge, unfettered sexual desire and murderous hatred, that is visually sumptuous and emotionally draining. Zhang Yimou's masterpiece is set around a dyeing workshop in a remote town in the 1920s. Gong Li, the ravishingly beautiful young wife of the ancient, impotent and sadistic dyer takes the old man's nephew as her lover. When the dyer is left partially paralysed by an accident, they brazenly flaunt their love, while the cuckold plots his revenge. What sticks in the mind are the stunning colours and superbly forthright performances that give this magnificent melodrama the stark, searing power of Greek tragedy.
