Tremendously beautiful Javanese opera that retells a Sanskrit Ramayana epic, this is the tale of a faithful wife (and former dancer) tempted by the passion of a local bigwig butcher when her potter husband falls on hard times. Set in contemporary Indonesia to the sound of the gamelon, with a chorus of athletic dancers, traditional Javanese shadow puppets, colourful costumes, sculptures, props and masks, this film full of arresting images is much more than a modernist version of a traditional text, but something very unusual for those with the patience for it.
