In remote rural China, a shy young girl arrives to work as a teacher. At thirteen she is barely older than her pupils, but must keep them all in school for a month if she is to get paid. When the biggest little troublemaker disappears into the city to find work she is determined to retrieve him. This study of a stubborn country girl battling against urban indifference recalls Zhang Yimou's earlier The Story of Qiu Ju and his wonderful Raise The Red Lantern.
