A deceptively simple yet well-rounded tale of an illegal abortion in communist Romania that carries a tremendous wallop, delivering a rich exploration of character, friendship, responsibility and devotion under duress. It might sound grim but screen realism rarely captures a time and place so well, nor creates such excruciatingly tense drama from such everyday events as a birthday party or checking into a hotel. Totally convincing in every way, especially in the piercing performance of Marinca as the staunch friend who has to pay a high price for helping her dippy roommate.
